~ January 2012 ~
~ A Note from Coni ~ HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!!!!! I had started writing this foreword last night: but wow….did things change this morning!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR HEATHER; TAMPA BAY’S FIRST AUTHORIZED ASHTANGA TEACHER!!!!!!!! WE ARE SOOOOO PROUD OF YOU. I received the phone call early this morning from Heather informing me that she was just blessed by Sharath, grandson of our beloved Guruji; to teach Ashtanga. For those of you not familiar with this, let me explain. Ashtanga is one of the oldest and most traditional styles of Yoga taught today. There is but one way to gain the blessing to teach; that is through years of dedication and returning to Mysore, India (usually 1-3 months at a time) to practice at the ‘source’: KPJAYI. Now that Guruji has passed, Sharath is the only one in the world that can make this decision. He did that yesterday for our Heather. This is an amazing accomplishment for Heather, and we at White Orchid are also being greatly blessed to have a teacher return to our shalas with this distinction! Please join us in sending your positive energies to Heather. Be sure to come and congratulate her in person at the shala upon her return in a few weeks!! So, as I said, I had begun writing this last night. My topic this month was about CHANGE. Perfect example of how a life can change so quickly!! If I have learned one thing from my years on this earth, it is that change is nothing new…change is the only constant… change is good….or it can be. It all depends on your perspective I think. My own personal perspective has changed drastically over the years. Staying in the comfort zone of what you know, what feels safe…never opening to the “what ifs” of life; is not really living. It’s in those places that scare you…. those thoughts and ideas you never really considered, those possibilities you didn’t explore…that’s where the real living is!! My wish for you all, in this New Year…is that you venture out, take that chance, imagine your life as you would like it to be. Change what is not working for you, and explore new possibilities! There really is something to all this “manifesting” theory, you know!!! These are exciting times for White Orchid, as well. As we settle into our newest location in Tampa, finding our fit there has been very eye opening! We are happy to see a core group of dedicated Ashtangis growing and blossoming there!! Clearwater is growing amazingly well, it seems we have found our niche there!! Much in the planning stages for the New Year; stay tuned for that as things develop. In the immediate future: We are so thrilled to welcome Greg Nardi back to White Orchid. Greg will be here for a weekend workshop January 7 & 8, in our Tampa location. This workshop is filling up quickly. Please call the studio to sign up and don’t miss this opportunity to work with one of the best teachers in the country!!! On Monday, January 9th, we are offering a 21 day challenge. Practice yoga (any class) 21 days between January 9 & 31. You’ll receive a free week of classes, two passes for your friends, and a White Orchid logo t-shirt!! Check it out on the website; great deal, and a great way to jump start this New Year! In Clearwater, we are offering our very popular Intro to Yoga series. We are also, offering an Intro to Meditation series during the month of January! In both studios; we are starting a once a month 2-hour session; called WHAT TO EXPECT IN A MYSORE CLASS. We want to de-mystify and express to new students, that Mysore style is the way Ashtanga is meant to be taught. There is nothing to be intimidated about. Please consider trying these sessions to help you feel relaxed and prepared to begin a most beautiful experience of the gifts of Ashtanga Yoga. We will begin new Children’s yoga at our Tampa location. If you haven’t seen the blog on FB about the immense effect Yoga is having on children. Please check it out!! No better way to help them begin the journey of a peaceful existence in what can be a very difficult world! On January 21; we are hosting a Sound Healing journey with Eluv. If you have not had this experience, please…. Check the website for information. This is a fantastic way to clear the negative energies and make way for the positive in the New Year. Finally………. Ally begins another weekend formatted 200-hour yoga intensive this April, at our Tampa location. Please review the page on the website for dates, topics and more. This is a life changing experience; whether you want to teach Yoga or not . There is an early bird, discount of $200.00 if you register by February 4th. I think that’s it for now. Have a wonderful start to the New Year. We hope to see you at the studios, and would be honored to guide you on your journey of Yoga!! Bless you all, and my love to you, Coni |

~ Insights into Ashtanga ~ by: Lisa Haag Misconceptions If I heard 6 years ago what I hear now about Ashtanga yoga sometimes, I may have never gone to a class. “Ashtanga hurts people and it’s boring”. There are lots of other things I hear, but those are the hot buttons for me. Let me give you a little background about myself. I was a fitness instructor and personal trainer for 10 years. What once brought me joy, was burning me out. In an area where superficial things started to seem more important than health, safety, and authenticity, I was being turned off. I was too tired to continually try to convince people that safety was more important that the speed of the music, and that the physical appearance of an instructor didn’t mean they would look the same if they took her class … misconceptions….so i quit…vowing NEVER to teach anything again…tiring of the hard sell on safety and health…so ironic..I know. My health suffered I’m sure because I stopped doing any physical activity, but I was happier. Seven years ago I had the joy of my life.. my daughter Sophie. What I thought I would fail miserably at, turned out to be something I excelled at! I like to say I had postpartum elation.. when I thought for sure I would have the opposite. …. Again, a misconception…… Funny how I prolonged something so long because I was convinced that I would suffer just like so many people I knew. I do consider myself fortunate. Postpartum depression is very serious Several months after I had her, I started getting severe migraines and knots in my neck like never before. I entered the gym with a new focus.. I worked out with a drive like never before. I was in pain. I never had a pain that didn’t go away..ever. After several months of little relief and even worse headaches that lasted weeks, I went to see a doctor. My life in the last six years has been one methodical scientific study after another. I was not going to live in pain. I did not believe chronic pain existed … funny how the theme of “misconceptions” comes up again. Yet while my daughter napped I would lay on the floor and wrap my head in ice packs so that I could feel ok when she woke up. In the morning I would ask my husband to lift my head off of the pillow sometimes so I wouldn’t pull a muscle in my neck….but no…..I didn’t believe in chronic pain…those people were crazy. Eventually a physician told me to try yoga. Since most of my headaches stemmed from my neck, maybe it would help. So I did. I tried several types of yoga and I loved the way I felt when I left. My neck was slowly starting to feel better, but I think that the peace of mind after a class coupled with my joy of being a mom was what saved me from what can happen to people with chronic pain…depression. I started to realize a trend.. I had misconceptions/ fears about depressions…I listed to what others said and was convinced that certain things in my life would lead to depression.. But the reality was ugly, While I was far from depressed, I was in some serious chronic pain ….. But I was just so happy…to a fault. So many people never realized and won’t realize until they read this that I was in excruciating pain almost constantly … for years. Even my own husband didn’t know how bad it was. After a couple of years of dabbling in yoga, I walked into a class where this soft spoken petite Indian lady was filling in for the out of town teacher. I didn’t know what was about to happen to me. I know my alignment was off, my breathing was erratic, and I knew I wouldn’t move well the next day… but I felt like super woman. I could turn my head, my chest felt open, I felt like I hadn’t felt in a VERY long time. I asked her “what was that”??? and it turns out it was part of the Ashtanga primary series. I was hooked. I knew that I wanted that feeling again, that feeling of dissipating pain, that feeling of eace, that feeling of hope that I may not be in pain for the rest of my life. So can you see why if I had heard what I heard now…that Ashtanga hurts people..that me of all people would have avoided it with a 10 foot pole??? I can tell you that nothing could be further from the truth for me. I entered that class and many others a VERY weak broken physically hurting person. I took what ever Ashtanga classes I could find…sometimes going to up to six different studios… Ashtanga was not hurting me..far fro it. I was getting better, Another thing you need to understand is I don’t live in Tampa, I live in Land O Lakes. Where is that? Not close to much. SO when I say I went to many studios.. I drove…up to 30 minutes most times. I had many teachers that taught what Ashtanga they knew to the best of their abilities and did a great job, I credit ALL of them for the journey to health I was on….. And then one day as a treat, I went to White Orchid…55 minutes away.. Well, that is when I crossed over the line to what some would say is crazy. I started driving 55 minutes to White Orchid, first once a week, then twice. I started learning about Mysore, authorized teachers, the training that the White Orchid teachers went through..and my practice started becoming refined, my body was becoming less weak. My pain started deminishing. Mentally, I was getting stronger than ever. So was I crazy to drive that far..some would say “yes”. But when you are in chronic pain you do crazy things, right? Some go for drugs..I drove 55 minutes to yoga. To me, that was the better option, and the only option. People start to ask you about yoga when they know you are dedicated to something…especially when you drive so far to go to it. This made me aware of something, not only was I a believer in the safe methodical sequence that Ashtanga provided, I was also aware that others were not going to drive as far as I was.. I wanted to help. I wanted others to feel what I was feeling. After 9 years the desire to teach was returning. I felt passionate for what Ashtanga you was doing for me and wanted to share it with others. So we fast forward to now. I am teaching at White Orchid Yoga, both locations.. I am thrilled. I love what I do. I love sharing this with others. I have a consistent daily Ashtanga practice. I feel great more times than I don’t. I am doing postures that I never thought would be possible with the medical issues I have. People in my life wonder why I am so peaceful.. I know along with my faith in God, and my incredible family, its the Ashtanga Yoga. It has changed my life. It will most likely partner with wester medicine, but even the physician that has seen me the longest is so impresses with what the Ashtanga has done for me. I am his posture child for neck pain. On the down side, I am also hearing the misconceptions. Only this time, I am not quitting. I am going to stand up for what I feel is right. Ashtanga yoga does not hurt people and it is far from boring in my experience. Can you hurt yourself in Ashtanga? Of course. Do I? Yes. When? When a student (could be me) does a posture incorrectly or before the body is ready. Can you hurt yourself running, in fitness classes, or lifting weights and why? Of course! and for the same reasons. And I can speak to this because I have been there. I rest my case. The series of postures doesn’t hurt the practitioner. That is why the series is set up in such a methodical way. That is why the postures are done in the same order each time. That is why it is traditionally practiced in a Mysore setting. In a Mysore style class setting it is self led with an experienced teacher in the room. You commit the series to memory with the help of a teacher. As you learn it, the teacher gives you more postures. But your body will never be asked to move on until it is ready, until it has mastered the previous posture. It is pretty hard to hurt yourself that way. Unless ones ego gets in the way and you don’t listen to your body that day..that is a whole different issue. So that brings up another point, what if you can’t get to a Mysore class? I get that. I couldn’t until a year ago and still couldn’t without the support and help of my husband. What if all you can come to are led half or full primary classes? Thats why there are modifications. Our practices are not supposed to look the same on the outside. Do any of us look the same on the outside? No, but we are to feel the same thing on the inside during a posture. Any of our teachers would be happy to show you some modifications, and will whenever possible. Thats why we walk around the room, demonstrate and adjust, instead of doing our own practice on our mat. We aren’t afraid to touch sweaty people, we want to help. We want you to feel what we all feel when we practice… And yes we practice..most of us, 6 days a week. Because we are students first, teachers second. We believe in what we do. We all have a story and we are there for a reason. So this brings me to the other point I find humorous. Ashtanga is boring. It’s the same every time and there is no music. Let me let you in on another little factoid about me. I have ADD. Diagnosed Inattentive subtype ADD. So if anyone is going to get bored it is going to be me. On a side note if you have, or joke that you have ADD..Ashtanga is exactly what you need. I digress….now lets get back to the point of I’m not sure how you get bored. 1. The breath. Ujayi breathing is tough enough to master let alone link each inhale and exhale with a movement. Then you need to keep that same breath pace and control while you are holding postures that mat make your heart start to race. That could take years just to master…so that’s something to hold your attention for awhile. You see, it never gets boring when you get so in tune with your body that you notice every little thing that affects your practice. If being in tune with your body is boring…Count me into the boredom club!! And oh..I might mention that there is a 2nd series, 3rd series, etc..so if point number 3 becomes null and void, you have options So pardon my bit of sarcasm as I scratch my head when people say Ashtanga hurts people and it’s boring. Come 6 days a week for a month. Learn from an Authorized teacher (We have one and bring others in monthly) or ones that work closely under the supervision of Authorized teachers (we all do and go through a comprehensive ongoing training)..and let me know if you still feel the same way. The only catch is…try to leave your ego and your misconceptions at the door. They will be the devil on your shoulder telling you to do more on a day you shouldn’t, telling you the teacher doesn’t want you to move on, telling you to not take the modification you know you should take. And nothing seems to bring on a battle with the ego like a consistent daily Ashtanga practice. we know,, we’ve all been there. I was about as hurt as an individual can get and can get bored quicker than the average person..and all I can tell you is that Ashtanga is the best thing that has happened to my body and mind. I am so glad that I didn’t hear these things..these misconceptions..before I started. I would have missed out on so much. Namaste!

~ A Note from Coni ~ A Time to Reflect… Happy Holidays to you all!!!! I love this time of the year, for many reasons. it is ,of course, a time to enjoy friends and family. Holiday festivities, too much food and fun! All of that is great. For me, personally, what I truly love about the ending of a year are the possibilities that await in the New Year. I have always been a “glass half full” person! This year, I have had begun the process of deep soul searching; looking at the past year through a ‘clear lens’. I am trying to make decisions that will best serve me, as I move forward in this life. Sometimes this is a difficult process. It can require evaluating that which is good for your soul, from that which drains it. Our time on this earth is truly just a blink of the eye. So, I implore you all to consider this; what is good and positive in your life; be it relationships, lifestyle, habits or passions…. Keep them close… nurture and deepen them. Those things, people, behaviors that drain you…consider releasing them. Detaching from negative and embracing the positive is a common thread that runs through many spiritual teachings. Now is the perfect time to begin anew…and see where it takes you… We at White Orchid are so blessed to be able to offer the gifts of Yoga to you, our blessed students. We thank you, care about you and are here for you as you experience the deepest blessing of Yoga. Yes…sometimes that means a little melt down…God knows we all have those, right??? They are a gift… keep your hearts open to these breakthroughs, and know that we are all together, as a family, here at White Orchid, to support that growth. We are experiencing many changes at the shalas, now that we are two!!!!!! Please bear with us through these growing times!! The process has begun for great new plans, for both our Clearwater and our Tampa locations in the New Year. We are having a huge year-end clearance sale in both boutiques. Tons of great merchandise, discounted 50-75% to clear the way for the new merchandise that will be arriving in the New Year!!! Great opportunity to get amazing deals on gifts for friends and family!! We end the year with a workshop at our Tampa location with Krista Shirley. Krista is a double-authorized Ashtanga instructor from Orlando. Please visit the website and sign up…you still have time!! As we look ahead we are so excited to welcome Greg Nardi back to White Orchid in January. This will be Greg’s first time in Tampa. We were blessed to have Greg on our staff for 6 months this past year; those of you who had the opportunity to work with him, understand how very special his teaching is. For those who have not worked with Greg, please don’t miss this chance. Again, see the website for details and sign up early for this one! I know that you will all send your positive energies to Heather, who is back in Mysore for her fourth visit to KPJAYI. I spoke with her this morning; she arrived safely and had her first practice with Sharath this morning…along with the hundreds of other students who travel to Mysore each year…. To practice at the source!!! We miss her already!! Hopefully, in the next months Jessica and Ally will also return to Mysore. My heart is so full, to see our beautiful White Orchids make this journey!! Well…..I think that’s it from me. Have a wonderful Holiday Love to you all, Coni |

~ Insights into Ashtanga ~ by: Ally Ford The Importance of Led Class The Ashtanga Vinyasa system is a breathing-movement system with special emphasis on the breathing part. While Ashtanga Yoga has been and still is traditionally taught through Mysore style classes, students must also attend one led class per week in India. It is in led class where students learn to incorporate the correct vinyasa method. Ever notice a tendency in your practice to stop between poses to wipe sweat from your face, fidget with your clothes, or want to run out to make a phone call? It is because you stopped focusing on and moving with your breath and instead allowed your mind to wander. These distractions zap your energy and make it ever difficult to get through your practice. Yoga sutra II.53 says that through breath control the mind becomes fit for concentration. Pattabhi Jois called the Ashtanga Yoga practice a “Yoga Mala,” in which the poses (or beads) are threaded onto the unbroken string of breath. The vinyasa, linking of movement with breath, teaches you how to inhale and go to this position and exhale and go to that position with little to no interruption from point A to Z. This graceful, continued movement maintains the heat of the practice for detoxification and flexibility, and ultimately focuses your mind. You’ll have less tendency to check out and instead check in, move from the state of distraction to that of meditation, and ultimately into a deeper state of awareness. If your schedule won’t allow one led Full Primary class per week, we suggest you drop in once in a while and take advantage of the opportunity to learn the correct vinyasa method, incorporate it into your daily Mysore practice, and tap into the strength and grace of the practice.
Tip: In led class, follow the teacher’s cue for the breath and count, not moving before it’s called. In Surya Namaskara (sun salutations) for example, on “Ekam inhale” your hands reach to the sky, on “Dve exhale,” you fold forward, on “Trini inhale,” you look up, and on “Chatvari, exhale,” you lower into Chatturanga and stay until the teacher calls the next pose. (Feel the power of connection moving as a unit with your fellow classmates.) Incorporate what you learn into your next Mysore practice. |

In these busy times, our yoga practice can, and often does, get put on the back burner. I think this is a big mistake!!! Not just because I own a yoga studio, but because I know from personal experience how much better balanced my life is when I practice regularly. This time of year seems often fraught with lots of emotion, both happy and sad, melancholy as well as joyful. For me personally, it is a difficult time on many, many levels. I get on my mat, I seek my beautiful ujjayi breath…and somehow, it’s all just so much more ok….I find some clarity, and in time, I find the joy again. Try to make time for your yoga practice; this is your gift to yourself!! Don’t forget, you deserve a gift too!!! Lots, as always, to tell you. White Orchid Tampa is heading into its second month. We have welcomed a few new teachers to our staff with this move; some not so new to Tampa: Eric Wheeler, John Allen Gibel, John Columbo, Lisa Haag and Jade Skinner. All amazing teachers and we are blessed to have them working with us in Tampa. So check out their bios and classes!! We are adding, changing and revising some of the classes in both locations so please be sure to check the website for these changes. Just a reminder all Mysore classes will be canceled in the Clearwater location November 7-11, in honor of Melanie Fawer’s one week Ashtanga Intensive. This workshop is a first in the Tampa Bay area and is an amazing opportunity for those of you who wish to develop and deepen your practices. Also, remember that ALL CLASSES, BOTH LOCATIONS will be free 11/11/11 in honor of this auspicious day! Enjoy! We have Kid’s Yoga classes starting in both locations. Parents please consider offering this gift to your children. Yoga is a fantastic way to help them learn to focus, deal with stress, and calm their minds, in what can be a chaotic world sometimes. These classes are offered as a series of six for $60.00 and can also be attended on a drop-in basis. View the website for more details. Plan now to do your Holiday shopping at one of White Orchid’s boutiques. Lots of new merchandise is coming in for the Holidays. We have two beautiful lines from India: Allamwaar clothing and a breathtaking jewelry line by Anina. Keep watching for a new line of jewelry coming soon, designed by one of my dearest friends Laurell Kimbrough. We are so excited to be working together to bring beautiful affordable jewelry to our studio. We also have a great sale running on selected boutique merchandise, up to 50% off. Come on in and shop early to beat the holiday rush. Finally, I want to mention that we have a White Orchid 200 hour YA training with our amazing Ally Ford beginning weekends April 2012, at our Tampa studio. Please check the website and plan ahead. If this is something your have ever considered, perhaps this is the time!!! This program is one of the most comprehensive and life changing teacher trainings you will find anywhere. We are blessed to have Ally offering this at our new location as well as in our Clearwater studio. And finally, finally: Our Grand Opening Party in Tampa!!!!! Please make plans to join us Saturday, November 12 beginning at 6:00pm. We have a fabulous evening planned. Great music, food and drinks. A gallery showing by two of our own Yogis!! A preview of our upcoming trunk show with Aalamwaar and Anina. Bring your friends and come help us celebrate our new location. Hope to see you there… Love to you all, Coni |

~ Insights into Ashtanga ~ by: Sharon Denton Ashtanga Convert I often get asked what made me become a dedicated Ashtangi, after years of practicing and teaching the style recognized as Vinyasa? The Ashtanga system has a way of stripping away all that we think we know and exposes what we can heal, the truth, unlike any other style of yoga that I have been exposed to. The practice itself purifies, strengthens and heals the physical body and over time the mind progressively becomes purified and in this, one realizes clarity and is more capable of understanding subtle truths. It’s coming back to the Ashtanga practice on a daily basis that keeps us committed to opening our hearts to the bigger picture of why we truly practice. This daily-dedicated discipline, intimately reconnecting with our breath, rediscovering the banhdas and gazing to our drishti, a meditation occurs through finding more space of the stilling of the mind. Over time, I have realized the perfection in the sequence of the postures and how each asana has an energetic effect and preparation for the unlocking of reconnecting and uncovering our true essence. Through refinement of the ujjayi breath, bandhas and drishti, the practice opens new doors to going deeper into meditation that embodies us around the clock. The biggest lesson of all in the Ashtanga practice is humility and through humility, we attract and invite the divine into our lives. Guruji said, “there is only one drishti, that is God”. I have always been a spiritual person, practicing my yoga in this way, but, surrendering to these ancient teachings of the Ashtanga tradition and opening to the lessons before me has taught me to understand humility in a new way. The daily Ashtanga practice prevents the “thinking ego” of creating what one thinks is best for the body, reinforcing existing samskaras. Practicing what is given in the Ashtanga series helps us to address those hidden samskaras with honesty in an intelligent way, allowing ourselves to heal, soften and overtime, create change. The true teacher is the practice itself.

~ October 2011 ~
~ A Note from Coni ~ WE DID IT!!!!! White Orchid opened it’s second shala in Tampa, on Tuesday, Sept 13th. We are thrilled to offer the Ashtanga Yoga tradition to the Tampa Bay area. There are many wonderful studios in Tampa, with many different styles of Yoga to experience. White Orchid stands alone, however, in offering a fully supported schedule of Ashtanga classes in which to help students develop their practice. It can be quite challenging to understand how and why Ashtanga is meant to be practiced; what to expect, and how very different it is from many of other styles. It is a very traditional style of Yoga; there are 6 series, with each meant to affect the body and the mind in a specific way. Ashtanga requires patience, and above all respect and dedication, before the immense impact of the practice is understood. So please, for those of you that are new to the practice; be patient; consider dedicating for a month, at least 3-4 times a week; only then will you be able to really begin to understand what Ashtanga is all about. It’s a lifelong journey, and far more than a physical exercise! We will be offering a special Mysore Challenge for NEW-to-Mysore Students, in November. Any student that is new to the Mysore practice and practices the complete month (23 days, excluding Saturdays and Moon Days); will receive the free Mysore practice for the month of December. This is a great opportunity to experience and begin to understand what this practice is and can do in your life. We will be making a few changes to the Tampa schedule starting next week, October 10th!! View our complete Tampa Schedule We have new Intro to Yoga, and Intro to Mysore series beginning very soon, in both our Clearwater and Tampa locations. Both series are great to jumpstart your Yoga practice, and begin learning correctly. Family Day; Oct 29 ~ Bring the family, and dress the kids in their costmes, for an afternoon of fun and games! We’re offing this FREE event to help bring together our community and allow an opportunity to share yoga with the whole family!! **Last opportunity to buy our buy-one-get-one, 1-month-unlimited special! Offer ends Oct 31*** Even yogis need a little pampering! We’ve partnered with Spa Sundara in South Tampa. Mention you are a White Orchid student and receive 30% off their first treatment! In celebration of the auspicious day 11/11/11 we will be offering all classes FREE at both our locations! Our boutiques are brimming with new merchandise, along with upcoming sales that will offer 50-75% off selected items. Great time to plan ahead for the Holiday gift giving season! We just had our first workshop in our new Tampa location, Tim Feldmann taught an amazing workshop for us!!!! Much thanks to all our students, and of course to Tim, for making it a great success!! Coming in November, my dear friend, Melanie Fawer from New Orleans. Melanie is the highest level of instructor blessed by Guruji, himself. She will be teaching a week long Ashtanga intensive at our Clearwater location. This is a chance to experience asana, chanting, pranayama, Yoga Philosophy and more. Melanie has a very easy style of teaching, I highly recommend you signing up for this workshop. Having a week to work with an teacher of Melanie’s caliber, will move, or develop your practice to a new level. Finally, time for another party!!!!! Please save the date; November 12, GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION, for our new Tampa shala. Watch for an evite coming soon! Again, as always, I want to thank all of our amazing students, both old and new to White Orchid for your love and support. Together, our dream of bringing Ashtanga to Tampa Bay is coming to fruition. ~ Insights into Ashtanga ~ by: Ally Ford New to Mysore-Style and Afraid to Try? Students who are curious about Mysore style but new to the practice often express their nervousness or fear of giving it a try. There is a misconception that one need know the Ashtanga practice before attending these classes when in fact one need not know anything about anything! “Mysore Style” is named after the town in the south of India where Pattabhi Jois, the Father of Ashtanga Yoga founded his school in 1948. As students showed up at Guruji’s door, he invited them in and taught them the practice slowly from the start, one pose at a time. And this is the method. A Mysore teacher introduces you to the practice slowly, teaching you pose by pose with a watchful eye on your alignment, and adding on more poses as your body safely allows over time. The beauty of Mysore style is the ability to move at your own pace. When you reach a point in the practice where you might need more clarity, you actually get to pause, stay and explore. It is like getting a private yoga session but in a group setting. You walk into a room of practitioners, some raw beginners and others experienced, all at a different place in their practice, moving with breath at their own pace. The teacher moves between students assisting them when needed. It’s a powerful method which helps deepen body alignment and awareness, and through focused breathing fosters the meditative, internal aspects of the practice. Know that the only thing needed to try Mysore-style Ashtanga is an open-mind and patience. The Mysore program at White Orchid is the best in Tampa Bay so you can trust that you are in safe, supportive hands. If you are at all curious about it, no need to question or wait. Begin it now.
